Fanny Cradocks Dogs dinner circa 1968

Fanny cradock was a unique individual and this recipe reflects that! From a newspaper article in 1968 she describes a favourite dish of her own invention. Mixing crumbled brown bread, tinned sardines and lightly boiled eggs. She called it her dog's dinner!  Easy to make, very filling but a bit bland. As unique as its inventor  Never she of being creative or trying something different.  Fanny Cradocks Dogs dinner made a lovely portable lunch. Shown here in my vintage Tupperware bowl

Cheese and potato pie c 1985

Made a gorgeous cheese and potato pie tonight for me and the children. Simple recipe but delicious and very reminiscent of the past. Coming home after a day at school to this treat ideally served with baked beans! All it needs is mash potato knob of butter and any cheese that you have knocking around that needs using up . Great the cheese add to the mashed potato and bacon the oven till golden brown on top . Ideally save some of the grated cheese for the top of the potato for the extra cheesy brownie crust .  vintage saucepan originally bought in boots in the 1970s    Vintage greater from the 1960s   cooked in my enamel oven dish

Pressure cooker Vegetable stew circa 1975

Ideally cooked in a pressure cooker. The base is pearl barley, start your stew cooking then add any vegetables you have in the house that need using ! Onions, carrots, potatoes peas leaks, anything at all!  Add stock and herbs, any think you like the joy of this recipe is that it is totally adaptable because it comes from a time when no food was wasted and what better than a vegetable stew to feed a family when you have food that needs using up and not much money in the family purse.  Are used to love this stew is a child any season , it is wonderful on a cold winters evening but it is also very satisfying during the spring when there are so many plentiful spring vegetables.  Call me astute is not complete without dumplings and I added 16 to the pressure cooker so there will be at least one dumpling for every help him freeze what you don't use. Gorgeous on the first day,  it is extra special the following day when all the flavours have had chance to matur...

Tea bread circa 1980

Tea bread circa 1980 Vintage Tupperware mixing bowl The old family recipe book. I loved this simple bread, a bit like a large scone, as a child. Sliced and served with butter and jam. Such an easy recipe, until today when I made it I was always under the impression that it was made with tea. The tea in the title however refers to the time of its consumption! Loved being able to serve it to my children, and it does not have to be confined to tea time, it made a lovely supper for me after an evening studying local history supper time, fresh farm butter and home made raspberry jam
